This year’s Black Friday was all about books for us. Lulu was having a 30% off promotion and I didn’t want to pass up on the opportunity to grab some of the books I put together, as well as pick up a few Christmas gifts for friends and family along the way.
My first order of books arrived today and, once again, I was well pleased with what I received. I ordered for us the three volumes of, what I called, “Sci-Fi Classics”. These first three volumes feature some pretty entertaining stories written by Andre Norton and Geoff St. Reynard. I’ve read most of them already, in digital form, but I also wanted to have paper printed copies. So, I worked on compiling them into these three books, creating both hard cover and paperback version. I wanted to get the hard cover versions, but we really have to watch our budget… so I went for the paperbacks. With the 30% off discount, they were quite reasonable. This also gave us a little bit more spending allowance to pick up a few more books as gifts, while the sale was on.
So, here are a couple of photos of front covers and the back of Volume One. You’ve got to like those cellophane wrappings each of the books arrive in, too. It means no fingerprints before you get to mark it all up youself!

When sitting on the shelf, they look great as a set, fitting right in with the rest of the books in our library.
For the layout of the text inside, I went with a format which I liked, found in the H.G. Wells collection, published by Greenwich House. You can see the spine of this book to the left of my Sci-Fi collection. Although my chapter breaks are not as ornate as the H.G. Wells collection, the double column and type-face are very similar. I particularly like that two column format. I also prefer the cream color paper, over the bright white, for novels like this. I just find it much easier on the eyes for reading text.
I’ll also say that, since I got my order in early, before Black Friday hit, my book order arrived pretty quickly. It only took a week, from order to arrival, for the books to get to me. That’s the fastest I’ve ever received a Lulu order. So, I’m quite pleased with my purchase and I’m looking forward to the other books we’re waiting for.
Lulu may be a little more expensive than other print on demand service providers, but from my experience, the quality is well worth the extra cost. Also, when these books arrived, they were packed in a proper cardboard box; Not a bubble envelope mailer or one of Amazon’s “this box has less material” so called boxes. So, they arrived in pristine condition.
